The 37th Annual Conference of the Société de Neuroendocrinologie (SNE, the French Neuroendocrine Society) and the 4th Colloque franco-québécois will be held in Quebec City from September 28 to 30, 2011.

In the language of the area's native people, "Quebec" means "the place where the river narrows", and it is at just that place along the majestic, 1197-kilometre-long St. Lawrence River that Quebec City was founded by the famous French explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1608. Over the ensuing 400 years of its history, this city—the capital of the province of Quebec—has forged a unique identity in which modernity and heritage are harmoniously combined.

On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee for this conference, I am truly delighted to welcome you to Quebec's capital, the cradle of French civilization in North America. Over the three days of the conference, we will be offering you a stimulating program designed to promote scientific exchanges and strengthen collaboration between France and Quebec.

The Claude Fortier and Jacques Benoît Honorary Lectures will be given by Professor Jean-Louis Nahon of the Institute for Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology at the National Centre for Scientific Research in Valbonne, France and Professor Michael Meaney of the Douglas Mental Health University Institute at McGill University in Montreal.

The four symposia to be held at the conference will update participants on recent developments in the following areas:

1. Neuroendocrine systems and chronobiology;
2. Central effects of polypeptide, peptide, and steroidal hormones;
3. Neuroendocrine malfunctions associated with obesity and anorexia;
4. Adaptations of neuroendocrine systems from development through aging.

A session will also be held in which the recipients of the SNE-Servier Awards for early-career researchers will present their research findings.

Ample time will also be set aside for communications outside of the symposiums, including 12 oral presentations of studies selected from submitted abstracts and two sessions of poster presentations. A major lecture for the general public, entitled "Le stress dans tous ces états" [stress in all its forms] will also be given, by Professor William Rostène of the Institut de la Vision (Paris), on the evening of September 28.

Lastly, the gala banquet will be held on September 29 in the Museum Chapel at the Musée de l’Amérique française (http://www.mcq.org/en/maf/lieux_chapelle.html). The cost of this social activity is included in your registration fees.

The Local Organizing Committee hopes to welcome many of you to Quebec City at this wonderful time of year, when the trees will be proudly displaying their bright fall colours.
